12th April 2008

I received a surprise last minute call on Thursday morning asking whether I was free this weekend to drive in the Malaysian Super Series, and as it so happened, I was. Malaysian Motorsports normal driver, Khaidi, had been called away at the last minute for a meeting, and with MAT Speed having built the car and prepared everything for the weekend, all they needed was for someone to drive the car. It was a Proton Putra Super Sixteen car, with close ratio gearbox. Not the fastest car I've ever driven, but it was good fun to drive and chuck about Sepang's North Circuit.

On Friday morning I tested the car for the first time, and also found out that I would be one of only two drivers driving a Proton in a field of 36 entries. The rest were all in Hondas, which have superior engine speeds. I realised immediately that I wasn't going to be fighting for a top five position, but rather a top midfield one. The testing went well, and I soon got used to the car and track, so we decided to pack up early and save the car for the weekend.

Saturday was the official practice and qualifying sessions. The practice only last one lap as the clutch was riding low, so I came in to allow time for the mechanics to adjust it in time for the qualifying session. Qualifying was a bad one though, it rained very heavily, and the set up I had on the car was totally wrong and I had so much oversteer I felt like I was driving a rear wheel drive car. Luckily though I qualified in 22nd position, which all things considered wasn't too bad.

It did however make for a very hectic race. Race one was almost a wet race as it had started drizzling while we waited on the grid, but thankfully it held off till the end of the race. After some dicing and very frequent position changes, I was up to 14th position. The racing was really fast and furious with cars overtaking each other left, right and center. Race two was a different story, as it was raining very heavily and the spray made it difficult to even see the car in front of me. All I could see were brake lights when the driver in front started to brake. I lost a few places at the start as I was still uncomfortable with the wet setup, but after a while I got the hang of it and started pushing, managing to overtake three cars in one corner at one point. In the end I had only moved up two places to 12th position. All in all though, a great weekend of racing and despite not being in the fight for the win, I felt like I had been.
